Glencore proud of contribution to WA

Glencore believes mining matters. They are proud of their mine workers because what they do matters for all Australians. The company is one of Australia’s largest producers of coal, cobalt, zinc, lead, nickel, copper and silver.

Glencore Australia Head of Corporate Affairs Cassandra McCarthy said the business had been investing and operating in Australia for over 25 years.

“We are proud of the economic contribution our operations make in Australia,” she said.

Last year, Glencore mining operations contributed $23.5 billion to the Australian economy, and employed 17,460 workers, had 22 active mining operations, spent $12.9 billion on goods and services from 7,000 Aussie suppliers and paid $8.2 billion in taxes and royalties to federal and state governments.

Ms McCarthy said from the Western Australian Goldfields to Singleton in the Hunter Valley to Mount Isa in north-west Queensland and Borroloola in the Northern Territory, Glencore’s contribution added up for Australia.

“But we don’t work alone, and Glencore is proud to recognise the thousands of Aussie businesses who we source goods and services from to keep our operations going,” she said.

“The coal, metals and minerals, like those mined by Glencore, help advance everyday life.”

Energising today, advancing tomorrow

“As the world moves towards a low-carbon economy, Glencore is focused on supporting the energy needs of today while also investing in the commodities that will make the transition to a low-carbon future possible,” Ms McCarthy said.

Transitioning the global energy, transport and other systems will take time and traditional energy sources including coal and gas that can help support secure, reliable and affordable energy supply during the transition to renewable energy.

Ms McCarthy said Glencore’s oil business imported a range of fuel products, including diesel, to Australia, and played an important role in ensuring national fuel security.

“We supply our mining and agricultural operations’ fuel needs and supply fuel into the wholesale fuel market and independent fuel producers,” she said.

“The metals and minerals we produce, source and market — like nickel, cobalt and zinc — are essential components in the technologies and infrastructure required to harness renewable sources of energy and support ever growing levels of connectivity.”

In Australia, Glencore is committed to delivering lasting social and economic benefits in the communities in which we operate.

“To date, we’ve invested over $150 million in partnerships across regional Australia,” Ms McCarthy said.

“We support community groups and events, in large partnerships and small community-based projects, over and above any regulatory requirements.

“We are proud to partner with larger groups such as Lifeline, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, John Hunter Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Royal Flying Doctor Service to small community groups like Leonora Bowls Club, Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre and Mount Margaret remote community school.”

Glencore produces coal, metals and minerals from 22 mines across Australia, providing jobs for over 17,000 people. Commodities like those mined by Glencore help advance everyday life. Visit the website for more.
