Mandurah residents shocked by brown drinking water

Dozens of Mandurah residents turning on their taps this week expecting a refreshing glass of water were confronted with something different.

Instead of the usual clear water, photos posted online showed brown-tinged water.

Many reported experiencing similar at their home.

According to the Water Corporation, discoloured or cloudy water is usually because of a change within the water pipes.

Any sudden change in the water flow can stir up sediment, which becomes suspended in the water.

Sediment makes the water look discoloured but it is harmless and the water is safe to use.

However, not everyone online was convinced of its safety.

“Get a sample for a laboratory just in case,” one man suggested.

“Drink from the kitchen tap not the toilet,” another joked.

According to the Water Corp running the garden tap closest to the water meter for two minutes can be effective at clearing the discolouration.
